Who owns the health center?
South End
Community Health Center is an independent facility managed by a
community Board of Directors. This independence means that
our community—not a corporate institution—makes the decisions
regarding the services we offer.
Where are you located?
South End Community Health Center is located at 1601 Washington
Street at the corner of Rutland and Washington Street (three
blocks from Massachusetts Avenue). We are in a six-story
building that has Flour Bakery and Walgreen’s Pharmacy on its
ground floor. We are accessible easily by
public transportation. Click here
for detailed directions.
Do you provide parking?
We do not offer complimentary parking. However, there are
a number of metered spaces on Washington Street in front of our
building.

How do I make an appointment?

South End to make one in person. If it’s an emergency, we
will make arrangements for a doctor to see you right away.

doctors on call 24 hours/day, seven days a week who will see
that you or your family get the care you need.
What are your policies regarding patient confidentiality?
We are
committed to protecting your privacy and have strict policies to
ensure patient confidentiality. These policies meet all
federal and state health requirements.
Who do you serve?
We do not
turn anyone away for health care. Our services are
available to anyone who wishes to come here. We primarily serve
residents of the South End and Lower Roxbury neighborhoods, but
many of our patients come from across Eastern Massachusetts.
We have a large number of Latino patients because of our
comfortable setting and bilingual staff.
What services do you offer?
The South End offers a full range of services to meet all your
health care needs in one convenient location. Services
include adult medicine, dental, eye/ear, family planning,
HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, laboratory, mental
health, nutrition, pediatrics, ob/gyn, and WIC. We also
have a pharmacy on our first floor so that it is easy for you to
get your medicine when you need it.
With which hospitals are you affiliated?
Because the South End is an independent health center, we have
affiliations with many hospitals. That means we are able
to accommodate your own individual needs should you require
hospitalization. We work most closely with Children’s
Hospital, Brigham & Women’s Hospital and Boston Medical Center.
Do you accept private insurance?
Yes. The South End accepts close to 100 different forms of
private insurance, including Blue Cross and Blue Shield,
HarvardPilgrim, and Tufts. Click here (insurance link) to

Yes.
The South End accepts MassHealth and Medicare.
Do you accept Free Care?
Yes. Please click here for more information.
What do I do if I can’t pay for my care?
Your ability to pay should not be a barrier to receiving the
health care you need. If you don’t think you can pay for
your health care, please call our Patient Services staff at
(617)425-2000 and make an appointment to see what options
are available. You might be eligible for free care,
through programs such as CenterCare and MassHealth, or we might
be able to make arrangements for you to pay for services on a
sliding scale.
If it’s an emergency, please call (617)425-2000 during
business hours or (617)425-2000 after hours and we will make sure you
are seen right away.
