About Us

Our Mission
The South End Community Health Center is a community governed non-profit, comprehensive health care organization for all residents of the South End and the surrounding communities. We are committed to providing the highest quality, culturally and linguistically sensitive, coordinated health care and social services to every patient, regardless of their ability to pay.

Our History
The South End Community Health Center (SECHC) was established in 1969 by a group of South End mothers who were tired of not getting the highest quality health care that they knew they deserved. Dr. Gerald Hass was the establishing physician along with Mel Scovell, a retired business man from the shoe industry.  SECHC was created as a pediatric health center and after a few years started to expand and change along with the community. The Health Center turned into a full-service health center with adult/family medicine, pediatrics, dental, eye care, obstetrics and gynecology, mental health and WIC services. Since its inception date, the South End Community Health Center has been the leading choice for health care in the community. Providing the highest quality and culturally competent health care is and always has been the first priority for SECHC.

Over the past three years SECHC has grown dramatically and now has over 19,000 registered patients who average 84,000 visits a year. In 2013 we expect that number to increase significantly. In 2011 the Health Center elaborated on an already established partnership with Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program by becoming the only partnered health center to go directly into shelters and motels to make sure the homeless population is getting the medical care they need and deserve.
